Rich Studio - An Online Exhibition Space For Leeds Based Artist Richard Baker

An Online Exhibition Space For Richard Baker

The paintings are constructed from layers which are vigorously drawn into as often as they are painted over. By making use of drawing, photography, digital manipulation and the different stages of the paintings themselves, as reference material for each work, my aim is not to create a realistic depiction of a space but to create a sustainable construct which hovers between the real, the remembered and the imaginary. The application of paint and the drawing techniques employed alternate, between a rigid, measured and restricted approach and a more gestural, expressive method. The conflict created between the uses of different techniques gives the paintings a sense of movement that is at once at odds with the stillness of the subject.
