Richard Baker studied Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University; he completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2003. He now works part time at Leeds College of Art alongside his practice.
Richard's paintings are constructed using numerous layers which are drawn into as often as they are painted over. By combining his use of painting, drawing, photography and digital manipulation in research; his aim is not to create a realistic depiction of a space or object, but rather it is to create a sustainable construct which hovers between the real, the remembered, the depicted, and the imaginary. His application of paint and the drawing techniques he employs, alternate between a rigid, measured, restricted approach and a more gestural, expressive method. The conflict created between his use of differing techniques fills his paintings with a feeling of movement which appears at odds with the stillness of his apparent subject.
